Clumsy????

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

Dcb 18 months is like a bull in a china shop!!! Seriously just plows thru everything and everyone. Spends most of just sort of barreling around with no real purpose.

Not sure if he is just super clumsy, in such a hurry to get somewhere or something else. Like he is not even aware of what's around him. Or maybe it's just that he's really large for his age so every time he does anything it is noisy and makes a big mess ha ha!

Watch for evidence that his vision is ok. Midjudging corners and things - ie how close he is to something is part of depth perception and is something that we aren't born with but develop in infancy. It can be an issue for a lot of kids. Size for sure matters in the sense that he will bump more things than a smaller child his age that is just as wobbly. Hopefully the more he walks the more control he will have.

He may also need some lessons on what is an object and what is a person and how we treat, bump into, knock over, step on each type.

I have never heard anything come up before about vision as it would be apparent in other areas I would imagine not just gross movement but for sure children with hearing issues have commonly also got an issue with balance. It's hard for us to say without seeing the child whether it is mindless all over the place as though he has no control (think tiny drunk person) or whether he is just rough and bashing through everything with complete disregard. If he is rushing around everywhere then I wouldnt have thought it is a serious issue versus an annoying phase he will likely get over but if he isnt speeding all over the place and moving slowly and acting this way, then I would think there is cause for concern. Just observe and document just the facts with zero opinion and if it goes on for to much longer then pass the paperwork to the parents and ask if they can follow up with the family dr as you are concerned about this behaviour in your daycare.

I had a child large for his age too and he was clumsy as well. Mom and I thought it was just because his body moved faster than his head. By the time he realized he should slow down, he couldn't slow his body down before he bumped into something lol.

He also had ear infections 2-3x a year though and that could have been a reason as well.
